When is the last time you stopped everything you were doing and simply focused on your breathing or looked at an icon or a beautiful landscape?
This line in the Apostles Creed makes me think about creation which makes me embrace in trust the Creator as known to me. It’s hard to put into words what I mean about embracing; it can only be experienced.
In Exodus 3:13 the writer has God named “I AM WHO I AM.” In Psalm 46:10 it quotes God as saying, “Be still, and know that I am God!” Sometimes the best experiences of the Divine are in being absolutely present to the current moment.
Perhaps Christians shouldn’t be so snooty with all of their attempts to describe God and experiences of the Divine. Perhaps we could learn from our Buddhist brothers and sisters and simply sit and become aware of what Paul Tillich would call the “Eternal Now” or what Richard Rohr would term the “Naked Now.”
